Arrival in Peru

Sunday, October 3. Election Day in Lima
We safely arrived forty-five minutes early, without hitting a mountain, at approximately 4 a.m. local time. The airport was reasonably quiet, but shops were open in the departure areas. I guess they want to make money. In Miami, all the retail stores and fast-food places closed at 10 p.m.
The meals on the planes have been gourmet. I want to travel Business or First Class all the time!
The “hotel” was a little surprising as it is a converted private home. It is old, but clean and very comfortable. We are in Miraflores, a very quiet and safe area of Lima.
We walked to the Super Mercado before breakfast and found it to be well-stocked. Breakfast comes with the accommodations. An extremely diverse fair was offered including scrambled real eggs and chopped hot dogs in salsa. Four kinds of juice, cold cereal, toast, and at least a dozen condiments were laid out. We ate lightly today, but will use it as one of our two meals-a-day starting tomorrow.
We had a snooze after breakfast, then walked down to the beach/cliff area. Although it is chilly, there were lots of surfers in the ocean.
We walked around the high-end, ocean-side mall, built into the cliff, and noticed the tour bus. Decided to use the rest of the afternoon taking the tour. We picked-up empanadas (pastry turnover stuffed with chicken or meat) from the street vendor by the bus, and were on for a quick look at what’s to see over the next two days. Although the sky is covered (smog or fog?), and the buildings have that big-city smut on them, the place is very tidy. Some of the neighbourhoods we traveled through looked very tired, but there are many parks and interesting places to visit.
Dinner was at a Peruvian restaurant like McDonald’s and Peter said the hamburger was just okay, but I had enough chicken breast-salad to do me two meals.
It is 8 p.m. and Peter is snorting, so I’ll download some pictures, and be off to make-up for some lost sleep.
I will write again before we leave Lima or when we arrive in Cusco.

  1. mmm... street empanadas....

That volcano looks pretty young, I'm suspecting that isn't high-end real estate reaching up the slopes.
